Finding the Right Renting Place

I knew it was time to leave my old apartment. The living conditions just were not right for me. I felt socially isolated, and the physical setup made daily life hard. The bathroom was far away from my bedroom, so during the night I had to walk through a dark area to get to the toilet several times. There was also no cooking area and no sink with water in my room. One night, walking through that dark hallway again, I finally said, "That's it, I'm moving."

The very next morning, the first place I searched was an over-55 village in Queensland. I had actually lived in one of those villages before, but I made the mistake of moving out four years ago. At the time, there were very old people living there, and I felt like I did not belong. I only realized that moving out had been a mistake once I started renting a room in a big house with a shared kitchen.

In my previous village place, everything was close around me: the bathroom, toilet, bedroom, kitchenette, and living room were all right there. I had a courtyard in front, a clubhouse close by for social gatherings, and a bus stop right near me. It was perfect.

Now, getting back into a village is hard. When I put my name back on the waiting list, they told me there was no set time for how long the wait would be. While I wait for a spot to open up, I am shifting between family and friends.

I am completely prepared for the day I finally get the keys to my new place. I have downsized to the maximum so I can move easily and without asking anyone for help; I only have two suitcases and a few large bags. On the day I move in, the very first thing I plan to do is write a list of what I need to buy—maybe some furniture if it is unfurnished, and a fridge—and then fill it up with groceries. After that, I can finally settle in and enjoy having my own quiet space again. It will be such a relief to have my independence back and feel truly at home.
